From an economist-mathematician to programmers?
He graduated with a bachelor's degree in mathematical methods in economics. I found a job as an analyst in a large company, however, I came to the conclusion that my chosen specialty did not quite suit me.
A bit of background... While studying at a university in this specialty, I had to write small programs in MATLAB, VBA, etc. more than once. to solve various problems. The process of writing the program was very addictive, and the results were excellent. In addition to studying at the university, I was interested in web programming in PHP, etc.
In general, now I'm going to enter the master's program. I wanted to consult:
Is it worth changing your specialty?
Is it promising to study as a programmer (programmer salary / analyst salary, promotion in positions)?
What are the chances of starting your own business with good experience and programming skills?

Personally, I know one example when an economist-mathematician retrained as a .NET developer. Everything worked out for the guy, sausage on Delphi, then C#/WPF, now c#/ASP.NET.
Go ahead.
As for the prospects - promising and even very (+ depending on which direction).
And about the question "is it worth it" - try it yourself.
I ate a dog on such questions on various forums and a toaster, as a result I sat down at a book in between questions and somehow dragged on.
spbaltnet.podfm.ru/solo - I recommend listening to this podcast. The host sometimes talks about how you can make a lot of money with programming and mathematical methods in trading.
In Germany there is such a faculty Wirtschaftsinformatik. Wirtschaft from "Economics", Informatik I think it is not necessary to translate. Duck here for
What are the chances of starting your own business with good experience and programming skills? This is probably an ideal option, though I don’t think there is such a thing in Russia (write in the comments if there is. Interesting). Do it yourself and forget it. This may work for a small number of people, but do you want to play loto? )
