Fonts or images for icons, which is better?

Considering cross-browser and cross-platform, as well as ease of editing, there are the most potential problems with fonts.
Creating an svg sprite with fallback generation for browsers that do not support svg is easily automated.
For icons with gradients, shadows, etc. it's also not difficult to make png sprites with retina versions.
If you are satisfied with browser support - svg symbols. That's all the sprites plus all the benefits of fonts.
So, in my opinion, fonts are in the furnace. I don't use them in my projects.
