Applications that are on a flash drive are not picked up after updating the software on the phone, or resetting to factory settings. Your phone was probably reflashed in the service, or reset to factory settings.
Contacts are still stored by Google. if you turned on the synchronization of contacts before you gave the phone for repair. But you will have to configure and install applications again.
