Firewall-server on VMware?

Good afternoon.

Tell me, will it be correct / correct to use one virtual machine with a dedicated uplink (having previously forwarded the interface) for the tasks of network filtering / Protection / remote access to other VMs, on the same hypervisor? And, accordingly, providing access to other network devices.

If such a scheme takes place, then what software is preferable?

Yes, it will be correct,
From free ones: PFsense, VyOs
From paid ones, for example Mikrotik CHR, Cisco (you need to choose from your budget, etc.)
I use VyOS and Mikrotik CHR in production.

quite a normal situation. virtualka with pfSense , which is forwarded VLAN from the provider, is a gateway for some network segment, or the entire network.

Normal situation, he lived for many years. Any linux will do. Well, or if you really want a router-router - either a hacked microtic firmware into a virtual machine, or Vyatta, which has already been mentioned.
