External NAS at home?

Good day, boys and girls!
Are there any ready-made solutions or which it is possible to organize a network "storage" with straight arms and a soldering iron?
Grid at home, several computers, laptop. And a lot of screws. One router organizes the network. I would like to make / buy such a small box, which has an ethernet interface, a power supply and the ability to connect one to three hard drives.
Informed about the existence of external screws with an ethernet connection. I'm more interested in using the accumulated mass of screws that are "poked" in computers.
Tell me which way to look / read? And yes, of course, the budget solution is of interest. In order to put the screws "somewhere" I do not need to buy a new computer. I want to disassemble current computers by stripping them of screws in favor of external storage.

I have solved this issue at home with Synology Disk Station . Read the list of features, it's impressive: torrents, smd network drive, ftp access, backups, encryption, beautiful ExtJs web interface. I am more than satisfied. On Habré, by the way, Burum did a review of this miracle . And you can also deliver software there ;-)

I use self-assembly on the atom + FreeNAS, though I had to spend a lot (~ 10 tyr for everything, but my mother is not cheap, plus it was 1.5 years ago). An integrated solution will probably come out cheaper now. On the other hand, FreeNAS provides trouble-free connection of new disks and a bunch of services that are very pleasant for file storage. Plus support for ZFS, which no “ready-made” NAS for SOHO can boast of. Well, all this combined with a fairly simple interface and openness. If you want to dig into the bowels of FreeBSD, no one will forbid it. The only caveat: if you plan to use the NAS as a torrent downloader, use the old 0.7.x branch, and not the recently released 8. The latter has been rewritten from scratch and is not yet for the home user, they promise to tighten torrents and UPnP in the future, they are not a priority.

Hello,
if you are interested, I solved this problem for myself by assembling a computer:
- mini-itx case - www.dns-shop.ru/irk/price_detail.php?i=114887 - 1899 rubles
- intel d510mo board with soldered intel atom - www .dns-shop.ru/irk/price_detail.php?i=117643 - 2500 rubles
- minimum memory - 500 rubles
True, alas, only one screw fits (more precisely, two, but you need to drill holes).
The fact that this is a full-fledged computer is a plus for me - I use it for secondary tasks (the video is slowly converting, and so on).

I use WD My BOOK Live.
The device is very pleasing ... and the installed debian on it also delivers.

I have a similar situation, only I still needed storage for backups of virtual machines, I thought about raising FreeNAS, but there was nowhere to place the piece of iron, I decided to take a ready-made solution:
NETGEAR RND4000 ReadyNAS ™ NV +. Of course it's not cheap. I ordered it without discs, because they already had their own here in place. While the work of the device suits.

Also pay attention to the manufacturer of NAS'ov QNAP , perhaps you will find something suitable. This manufacturer has models for both home (1-4 slots) and more powerful models.

For a thousand or two rubles, you can buy an old system unit and a PCI-SATA card for it. A friend gave me such a system. There is some kind of Celeron, 0.7GB of memory. It perfectly copes with the tasks of a file cleaner, torrent downloader, backup server, personal web server.

1. Western Digital makes network drives - plugged it into the ethernet, got an FTP / Web server
2. You can configure SSHFS http://eax.me/data-sync/

Maybe you can give me a hint. You need about the same thing, only you need ten Terabytes of space. This is at least five hard drives.

As usual, there are two ways - if there is money, then we buy a ready-made solution (here we have already thrown options), and if there are direct hands and a desire to save money at the expense of time, then we assemble it in parts.
Due to the availability of very cheap components, it will not be a problem to assemble the electronic stuffing (mini-itx or even mATX), but the case and, possibly, the power supply can be a problem (especially if there are a lot of hard drives), this is where you need to be smart and skillful ' work with a soldering iron '(generally, you need the ability to work with iron and plastic / wood for the box, plus competently design the placement and dimensions for cooling and soundproofing).
ps Of course, such a fuss is required if the goal is to reduce the size and noise of the server, otherwise it is better to purchase a ready-made large case and assemble a 'normal' computer.

as an option dlink, dir some with yusb. On yusb we cling a yusb hub, to which we cling yusb adapters for screws. A sane firmware is rolled onto the long, but the performance will be so-so)
