External laptop microphone not working?

Good afternoon! Please tell me this is the problem. I have one headphone input on my laptop, I need to connect an external microphone! I bought a special adapter, I insert it, and it gives me a window with a connection to an external speaker or a headset, although the adapter has nothing at all! Tell me what to do.
