Explain, please, “on your fingers” about free licenses

Forgive me if the question seems quite simple to you, but I did not find where it would be written simply and clearly. Suppose I have developed some software product and I want to distribute it as open source software. I looked at what licenses there are and chose the one that I like best. Let's say it's the GNU GPL. What to do next? Just add information about the license to the source code, attach its text, and that's it - can you distribute it?

I just read it yesterday, short but simple. There is in LinuxFormat 9,10,11/2012 in one of these numbers. There is definitely something about Apache, GPLv2, GPLv3, BSD and something else.

Read the text of a specific license (well, or its presentation in “human words”)
Specifically for the GNU GPL - in general, this is enough. Sample texts for the new program are available at www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html#howto
