Energy saving in Ubuntu 10.10?

The desktop computer has an Asus M4A78-EM motherboard . To save energy and reduce noise in XP, you can use the Asus EPU-4 Engine utility, there are no analogues for Linux and it seems not to be expected.
How can I organize energy saving in Linux on this motherboard (in particular, in Ubuntu 10.10)?
Are there similar motherboards with Linux power saving support?
Thanks in advance.
