Encrypted conferences via XMPP: myth or reality?

Due to recent events, a mechanism for secure communication was required. There are two popular security methods for XMPP: GPG and OTP. However, all the clients I found support them only in private communication.

Voice/video conferences are not required, text is sufficient.

OTR is not suitable for conferences because you need to synchronize the same fingerprint with all participants, which is inconvenient and not secure.
As for PGP: theoretically it can be implemented, but the server will probably have to be patched, and again it will not be too secure because all participants will have to exchange keys.
It’s easier to make a server somewhere on a VPS, and go to it through a VPN.
