Ecc and non ecc RAM?

Is it possible to insert unbuffered ecc RAM into a motherboard that does not support error checking? (Regular PC, not a server)
Can it be mixed with unbuffered non-ecc RAM afterwards? Will there be big losses?

I personally tried ECC DDR3 without support - it just did not start (without consequences for the motherboard and memory).
This question is more interesting for DDR4 in combination with Ryzen; processors support ECC, and at least the system should start, but will work as with conventional memory. For the error correction function to work, support at the BIOS level is required.
