ebook help me choose
I want to buy an e-book for myself and at the same time for my parents. I laid eyes on the nook of the first generation (the price for the second generation is not encouraging). What are the criteria for choosing a book? What formats does it need to read in order to be able to download books from a computer? What book files are popular on the web?
For example, I laid eyes on the Amazon Kindle, but is it possible to load books downloaded from the network into it? The same situation with Sony readers, no idea if there is a DRM or not. For the price, I think about putting it in 150 ye apiece (the first nuk took just the price - 120 without delivery). The touchscreen and other bells and whistles are not particularly interesting, not the same tablet. The backlight is also redundant.

The first Nook, IMHO is not needed. The color screen quickly kills the battery, and there is almost no benefit from it. If e-ink, then definitely Kindle 3, and if you want color - then nook color - there will be a full-fledged android tablet, with a market and goodies and up to $ 300.
The most popular format on the web is fb2, but Sony, Nook and Kindle do not support this format out of the box.
The selection criteria are an adequate brand (as a result, software) and the e-ink generation. on the E-ink Pearl Kindle, which is considered the best technology at the moment in terms of contrast and rendering speed.
Don't worry about DRM - out of the box, Kindle allows you to upload books to epub via USB - there are already a bunch of books in this format, and converting from fb2 is very simple.
Plus for the Kindle there is a Russian-language firmware. In general, there is a huge Kindle FAQ here, I recommend that you read it before buying: www.the-ebook.org/
PS: Another important fact is that Amazon itself hisses Kindles in the CIS. In the case of Nuki, you will still have to pervert with intermediaries (shipito) and delivery.
I myself chose between the first Nook and Kindle 3G. As a result, took the second.
+ 3 times longer battery life (30 days versus 10 for Nook - Wi-Fi and 3G are disabled)
+ E-ink is more modern and more contrasting. You can even see it in the photo.
+ In the version with 3G free Internet.
I download books on the Kindle myself on the network and normally upload them to the device. No problem.
If you do not need a touchscreen and other whistles, then the Kindle is a chic choice.
Took for Mom Kindle 3 generations.
Advantages:
1. Does not discharge for a long time;
2. Reads many formats: pdf, fb2 (the most popular format) without problems, if anything, I use Caliber ;
3. Lighter than Nooks;
4. More affordable;
5. The screen is also better;
6…
Of course, Nooks also have advantages, but for Parents, I bought a Kindle.
Take kindle special offers for $114 - you won't regret it. If there is extra money, then sony prs-650 (350 for the house is not an option, is it more camping or something). Do not consider everything else: why do you need either cloudy paper or an lcd in the reader?
What will you read?
If fiction books, then you can take both 6 "and 10".
If technical, then only 10", because some of the texts are djvu and raster pdf - they are not scaled by line breaks.
This is one criterion.
The second is the convenience of the menu.
In general, no one has fundamental problems. You
should pay attention to touch screens - they are also e-link (with a stylus) - it's more convenient than chasing the cursor with buttons.The
third is design.Here
you are your own adviser.
Sony or Kindle, the rest is below the level.
Kindle has no competitors at this price.
But if you want to flip through other touchscreen goodies with gestures, then Sony. In custom firmware, fb2 reads, digests PDF well, metal, well, a cool device, although expensive.
I thought to take Nook Color. Then I realized that the tablet is not needed. I was looking for cheap Pearl screen books that you can buy here. There is no experience of buying on Amazon - scary. Although www.the-ebook.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=8 helps here.
Critical for me: FB2 support and no conversions.
What is not needed: Internet (I don’t understand why), radio, keyboard (I don’t read much, not many books)
I took the GMINI MagicBook M61P (P is Pearl).
The screen is good, the software / firmware is not very good. After waking up, it slows down, too few characters are displayed in the list of books. The brakes seem to be removed with the latest firmware - I haven’t sewed it yet.
The cover is pretty nice.
By and large, there are two options: the first generation nook or Kindle3.
Pros of nook regarding Kindle:
Stronger and better-made body
Very convenient page flipping with a gesture on the touch screen (IMHO)
Pros of kindle: Whiter
screen (visually, the difference is not great)
Better software
No additional screen and android, which translates into much more economical spending energy.
The additional nook screen is really inconvenient and almost never used. Only scrolling with a gesture on it gives aesthetic pleasure.
In addition to them, you can pay attention to the wonderful software from Pocketbook, but they are very flimsy and unreliable - there are many complaints about cracking screens. Although I personally think that the matter is in the design, since the nook does not have such problems (verified: survived a hike in the mountains in a backpack with any scrub without a cover, as well as various falls without consequences).
I took the Kindle for myself and I don’t regret it at all. The battery lasts a very long time, the quality screen is quite convenient to use, the price is just super. Buying in Ukraine is very simple, it costs 139 bucks for the device + 20 for delivery to the apartment.
PDF is not very good for reading (6 inches), I have no problems with conversion thanks to Caliber.
I sold my nook pretty quickly. Very uncomfortable. The battery sits down instantly. And for me it remained a mystery - why is a screensaver needed there? To make the battery drain faster. I did not find how to disable this feature. Well, his “slowness” was very annoying both when paging through pages and when trying to use the browser. I did not use other readers.
If you always have access to the Internet and mail, then you can send an email with the book to [email protected] and it will be converted and sent via Wi-Fi to KINDle. And if you want omnivorousness and reading from a flash drive, then pocketbook. At the very kindle 3g, I send it to soap and I'm not worried.
I have a PocketBook 360.
- E-Inc
- reads almost everything: fb2, fb2zip, pdf, djvu, doc, jpg, html, txt.
- charging lasts for a long time
- there is a microSD slot
- it connects to the computer like a regular flash drive
- the kit comes with a program for downloading RSS to the book
Of the minuses:
- relatively small display
- sometimes freezes, and the reset button is located inconveniently (under the battery cover)
Guys, please tell me how to buy Kindle on Amazon with delivery to Russia. I have never bought anything on Amazon, but the lack of delivery to Russia is very embarrassing.
How did you buy yourself?
I have two books, both from PocketBook. I took the first one 1.5-2 back (model 301+), I took the second one (901) six months ago to read technical literature (it is often in pdf and djvu formats). Neither the first nor the second cause any complaints when properly handled. Try to take a closer look at the PocketBook 601. A fairly universal solution with out-of-the-box localization, omnivorous in formats and no need to mess with foreign countries.
