Does the slider need separate thumbnail images?

There is a slider with switching slides through slide thumbnails below it. Does it make sense to create reduced copies of the original images for thumbnails, or is it more logical to use the same original images, reduced by styles, for thumbnails?
My reasoning is this. On the one hand, if you use original images for thumbnails, there is no possibility to load them dynamically (LazyLoad), because they are already loaded into thumbnails, and it's pointless. On the other hand, miniatures are extra. traffic and more the number of requests to the server.
Who thinks about this?
