I don’t really understand all network things, so I turn here.
Has anyone heard of this device?
And is it really capable of amplifying the signal?

I can’t say anything specifically about this one, but wi-fi repeaters are quite a common thing.

Call and find out how it works / whether you can return it if you don't like it (no effect).
The courier will bring it - if you don't like it, return it to the office.
