Does the average user need a VPN?
Found one similar question but the topic was not disclosed.
I am a regular user from Russia. I have 3 devices always connected to the network (desktop, laptop, phone), WiFi is deployed at home.
I make online payments 5-10 times a month, use online banks, store passwords in the browser, use a couple of clouds with no confidential information, in general, nothing special.
Of the "forbidden" resources, I visit only the rutraker, for this I need the official browser extension. Sometimes online games. I don’t wear a tinfoil hat, I don’t suffer from paronoia, but I also don’t want to keep my data wide open.
I'm just wondering if spending 500-1000 rubles is justified in my case. per month for a decent VPN like expressvpn or nord, besides with the inevitable loss of speed? Can you answer unequivocally, experts?
Thanks in advance.

+ a server in Hetzner cloud (or whatever you have experience with) for three euros per month.

Is spending 500-1000 rubles justified in my case? per month
I doubt that vpn on its cloud will greatly complicate the life of special services in an unusual situation.
if there is a criminal case, then even hetzner will give all the data, incl. cards from which they paid for the server and IP that constantly connected to it, including via SSH. in this case, it will not be difficult to connect one with the second.
but if the paranoia is purely domestic, well, I just don’t want to be fired on, then a cloud server will do.
1000 is a lot for vpn. Hetzner costs 3 euros...
vpn has its drawbacks... long connection, possible ping, limited traffic (hetzner 20TB).
I personally am for VPN because it’s not easy to collect my data just like that, but knowing how long it takes to connect + third-party software on your computer + there is no usable program to work out of the box. I put pritunl on a hatzner even I didn’t like it ... while it all holds back and I survive with a torus and a frigate ... for the time being
In your case, the waste is not justified.
If it was justified, then you would know exactly why you need it and you would definitely know how to configure at least basic OpenVPN.
The browser plug-in / browser / firewall on the router can also successfully combat the collection of personal data.
VPN, on the other hand, is needed only when you know 100% that without it you can’t do what you have planned (torrent, prohibited sites, hacking, bypassing blocking, linking a house and a summer house, etc...).
Buying a VPS (and even more so a VPN) just to protect personal data is nonsense. No one will guarantee that the vpn service does not collect information about you secretly...
It makes sense if you do not want your domestic provider to collect information about you. And we agree that the western owner of the VPN should collect it.
VPN is needed when you do not want to glow.
And only those who are at least somehow connected with illegal activities do not want to shine.
It's my opinion.
No :)
Because VPN is a technology for building tunnels between networks. An ordinary user, if he is not an admin of course, does not need it, because he does not have networks with which he needs to contact :)
VPN is primarily for security.
For example, we went somewhere to rest or on a business trip. Connected to the hotel WiFi.
So without a VPN, this is very unsafe, because. Traffic on public networks can be sniffed by hackers.
This is just one example of a threat.
