Does such a technology exist?

Hello!
Is there a technology based on beam interruption?
Imagine a touchpad, on the surface of which there is a fine grid of rays. You poke your finger, the beams are interrupted from the side, and thus, depending on where the beams are interrupted, is transmitted to the device as a touch?
The same can be done with the keyboard, mouse, so you can draw, you can even copy 2D objects.
What do you say?

On my old reader from Sony, this is exactly the implementation of the sensor. Plus, I met an intercom with similar technology, for a long time I could not understand how a reaction occurs when you press a metal plate with numbers engraved on it. When I figured it out, I covered the entire keyboard with wet snow and watched his reaction :)
