Do I need to partition a disk before formatting?

If I plan to use LVM to manage volumes, do I need to fsdik the disk first?
Are there any pitfalls in making a physical volume from a raw device right away?
How right?
pvcreate /dev/xvdf
or
fdisk /dev/xvdf
... create 1 partition
pvcreate /dev/xvdf1
