Do I need to exclude UTM links in robots.txt?
A new marketer girl came to work for us and, having gone over her checklist, made the statement that it is necessary to close utm-tags to links from indexing by search robots.
Realizing that such tags are already an industry standard for analyzing advertising campaigns, have search engines really not learned to understand and glue duplicates themselves over the past five years?
Then I went ahead and looked at the robots.txt of the largest sites. It turned out that no one in the West deals with such issues, and only Russian-language resources suffer from them.
In total, which option is preferable for large sites:
- immediately glorify canonical links in meta tags (it will also solve many other problems with duplicates)
- teach robots not to index by tags in robots.txt
- do nothing, because search engines themselves are able to glue pages with utm parameters
