Do I need https when communicating device with amazon iot?

I want to make a device for the Internet of things (the same button). The basis is arduino, but judging by reading the documentation, you need something like yun shield, which will establish a https connection for a post request.
Question - is it possible to send a message to Amazon via just http with the signature sha256?
