There are two main peripheral power connectors.
1. MOLEX 4 (Molex 8980)
2. 15 channel Sata for power supply
The first option is obsolete and has not been used for a long time to power hard or solid state drives.
Apparently the power supply did not have a free connector of the second type. Therefore, an adapter from the first type to the second was used to connect the ssd.
If the power supply has free sata power , then it is not needed
