Do it yourself
Robotex, 2011-03-17 02:02:34

DIY smartphone, is there?

I have an old dream - to assemble a PDA at home. Is it possible at all? Let it be 5 times more and 10 times more expensive, but the pleasure of realizing that you did it yourself will be worth it.
So where can you read about it? Smart should be quite modern in terms of filling (it doesn’t matter if it’s at least 10 years outdated in appearance) - a good percentage (perhaps Nvidia Tegra, if they are sold individually), touchscreen, wi-fi, 3g, gps, usb-host , a lot of memory, capacious battery.
As far as I can imagine, the phone is the same computer. So - is it possible to purchase all these components and assemble the phone at home? (and we'll install some Linux or freeware operating system).

An interesting idea;) it seems to me that if you collect it from improvised means, then it will turn out to be a stationary computer with a UPS and a 3g module, for example ... oh, yes, even with a small touch screen :)

OpenMoko Frerunner might work? (only it is already assembled, but it can be disassembled and there is even a debugging board separately)

It will not be easy to do this, TEGRA is usually only in Soc (system on chip) and is not sold separately. I think it's worth looking in the direction of embedded sytems. Here is a worthy candidate for a mother.

open moko. There, only software DIY will be enough for another 5 years to come.
And if you really want an iron DIY - then a beagleboard, a gsm module (a huawei modem from a megaphone should be enough) and a lot of hemorrhoids with setting up this beaver.
