Distribution by a router of the Internet from a LAN port?
The essence of the problem. There is a provider with the organization of connection on VPN. There is a Dlink DIR-300 router. By connecting a package of 10 megabits, speedtest.org and torrents subtly hint that the speed does not rise above 3 megabits. We connect the computer directly - voila, there are 10 megabits required. What is the reason is not clear (options for solving this problem are also accepted).
Because I do not use my desktop with the advent of a laptop, I decided to install it as an intermediate server, i.e. provider -> PC1 -> Dlink -> all others. Simply connecting the computer to the router did not give any effect (the connection is shared on the vpn computer, everything is ok), and connecting the network cord to the WAN port with a static address also had no effect. After digging around for about 40 minutes, I found a way of a crutch solution - the router was transferred to Acess Point, the IPs for the rest of the devices are assigned manually, specifying the PC1 gateway as the default.
Whether the decision without crutches is possible?

install fresh native firmware from here ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-300/Firmware/ the problem should disappear
I had this DIR-300, I sold it, because it was not possible to get above 3 Mbps from it.
In terms of without crutches, I can suggest installing DD-WRT firmware on the router, it allows you to carry any crap to specify the gateway with DHCP not your WAN, but any IP you like. He lived like this for a while, getting an Internet on a computer and distributing it through a router.
In any case, my advice to you is to change this UG to something better.
I have a TP-Link wr642g where in the DHCP settings you can specify what to distribute to clients, that is, if nothing is specified, then everything is by default, and if you don’t like it, you can specify the gateway and DNS others.
Look for something like this and get rid of hemorrhoids with a static setting.

That's the way it should be. DIR-300 is a VERY OLD piece of iron, it is not surprising that it cuts the channel so much.
I use Netgear JWNR2000 for 2000 rubles. with delivery. By L2TP on the "Gorbin". It keeps 10 megabits properly, with ftp.corbina.net it gives about 9 megabytes / s (provider's locale). DHCP distributes, incl. you can assign static addresses. WiFi is about 15-20 megabits (G), but I haven’t seen it on my devices anymore. N-declared, but there is nothing to check on.
With PC IMHO, you need to make a router on some * NIX and put NAT/VPN/proxy/DNS/DHCP/what else your heart desires there, and keep DIR-300 like AP.
And the router can be put in bridge mode (bridge), it seems. Or just plug the wire from the computer into the LAN port of the router.
Try to build OpenWRT, or install dd-wrt. It should be faster. I don't know about openwrt really, but dd-wrt uses hardware NAT for this chipset.
You can also try Aprouter, if I don’t confuse anything and a realtek router.
Or wait, just Dir-300? Not NRU? Then it's sad, he's really weak. Touch the processor, maybe it makes sense to put a heatsink.
