Did your ISP limit your connection speed?

Hello
The apartment is connected to wi-fi, the router is issued by the provider, Netgear WNR612, with a PC connection via ASUS USB-N13 adapter
The speed is 100 Mbps, the real speed has always been 55-70.
But since the new year, a sign appeared in your personal account "Wi-Fi connection speed 40 Mbps, Speed at the rate of 100 Mbps, a more powerful Wi-Fi router is available to you!", while the connection speed dropped to 18-25 , also started having problems with ping, it jumps from normal 40 to 397.
In technical support I received the following answer: "Unfortunately, in the actual radio environment, this Wi-Fi router will only be able to give out this speed." To be honest, I did not understand such an answer, but they could not explain it to me. What does this answer mean?
The question is - is it worth contacting the provider again, or are they right, and some technical limitations have appeared? It is embarrassing that right under the sign with the speed limit, large banners appeared with an offer to buy new routers from the provider, with which the Internet, as they said in technical support, will again begin to work at full speed.
Thanks

This is a scam, an attempt to impose the purchase of their equipment. To propose a solution, a more detailed description of your connection to the provider is required, including the ability to connect their specialists to the router.

You have been deceived. They want to force you to buy a new router.
This is a complete lie. Never fall for such claims. The provider cannot find out such information in any way.
Several solutions are possible:
1. Buy a router in a store, throw away the old one. Ask the provider to change the binding to a new MAC.
2. Reflash your router. But, not everyone succeeds.
3. Connect to another provider with the current router. Perhaps the current provider really cuts the speed of your router.

Theoretically, the provider, since he issued it, can arrange such problems. Practically, I doubt it.
I would reset the router settings to factory settings, if the firmware is not from the operator, and see what happens in the end. if everything is the same - you have the air loaded and the 5 GHz band recommended here is a good solution.
