Debian 7.6.0 problems with gnome, where to look?

Everything seems to be up and running, except that in gnome any program you open appears on the desktop as an empty window filled with blue. Please help a beginner with advice on how to fix this.

Installed from debian-live-7.6.0-i386-gnome-desktop.iso
