Creating a chat without php?

I want to try to write my own simple chat. I read questions here, googled, all I found was the creation of chats using php.
Please tell me what I need to read / study in order to create a chat in javascript
As I understand it, I need two things:
1) node.js
2) socket.io
can anyone have an article on a bunch of these two things?
all? or something else?
