Convenient monitor combination?

Which monitor combination is best?
classic 2 two monitors 22-24 inches with a resolution of 1080, one 27 inch monitor with a resolution of 1440
or some kind of tricky combination, for example, a 27-inch monitor + 2 inverted monitors 17-19 inches?

I sat for 22 or 24 - like the main one, one vertical, one horizontal. Win7 has handy hotkeys for moving windows between screens and arranging windows half the screen left/right.
Unfortunately, with a vertical monitor, there are no hotkeys for arranging windows along the top and bottom edges. It was depressing.

I have been working with two monitors for a long time, at first there were generally two CRT tags. Ease of use depends on the tasks at hand. For example, to work in 3DS Max, it is preferable to have one large monitor (the more the better) and one auxiliary, smaller, in portrait orientation for references, messengers, etc. Since I also did a lot of programming, I can say that such a scheme will be convenient for many programmers. Three monitors can be placed far from every table, so I personally lean towards two. I currently have a 30" primary monitor and a 20" secondary monitor in portrait mode.

One is big, the other is small. In fact, it is not so important where which, worked with different configurations, the very presence of a second monitor gives a plus that no large monitor can cover. But it is desirable that one of them be widescreen. On one test or video, and on the other everything else.
Most of all I like the configuration when the main monitor is in front of me, and the second one is on the left. So there are no problems with clicking on the cross near the window in full screen.
In win8, the multi-screen mode has been improved. Now the taskbar can be configured for each monitor separately. They also made it so that, with a normal horizontal configuration, hovering over the start button would not allow the mouse to move beyond the left screen. There, the barrier is always a few pixels. This was missing before.

Different combinations for different needs.
For example, for layout, the combination 2x24 '' is very convenient for me, with 1 (main) horizontally, and the 2nd vertically from the right. On the main IDE and other utilities, on the secondary browser with Firebug (browser on top of firebug on the bottom).
A familiar artist uses a bunch of 2x24 but both are horizontal. on the main editor and on the secondary one, two types of rendered image (full and some kind of working layers) located horizontally next to each other.
Traders love a bunch of 3 or more smaller monitors. 1x27 the main worker and the rest are small around, with some kind of online charts (I'm not strong in this, but I heard that this is a professional necessity)

If you are dealing with layout, it probably makes sense to have one 3x4 monitor to check the result on it. Widescreen ones are good, but one is enough for work, the second is for checks or additional programs, its diagonal is not so important.

There are never too many monitors, I use 24 main widescreen in the center + 22 (4:3) horizontally on the right + 22 (16:9) vertically on the left, and this makes me very happy. Less switching between windows means faster work. I think that the next upgrade will be to replace the worker with 27-30.

Watching what you are doing.
My favorite options are
1) 2 by 24 inches from 1920x1200
2) 30 inches and 24 inches

As already mentioned, it depends on the type of activity.
For web development, it is better to have at least one widescreen monitor for layout testing. Preferably 1920x1080 minimum.
I saw an information analyst with a MacBook 13''+ configuration in portrait mode, a 1920x1080 monitor, he watched news feeds on it online.
I use a 1920x1080 laptop myself. In the office for work I connect 19'' 1440x900 on the bracket.
