Connection from idea to a DB?

Good afternoon, I have a question for javaists,
I ask you to help fill in some gaps in experience and knowledge, namely, I write a little in Java in ideas, I came to the need to interact with the database, for a number of reasons, MySQL Workbench could not be installed, but there is PHPmyadmin, now the question : Can I directly connect to the database in PHPmyadmin from the idea, or do I still need to finish off Workbench and install MySQL Connector/J? I understand that I misunderstood something in this chain?
