Conditional extremum - how to understand this equation of communication?

The teacher sent a problem with the following content: "Let there be a rectangle with sides x1 and x2 and let x1=x2=1. For which x1 and x2 the area of the rectangle S=x1*x2 is maximum". The first logical question is that since x1 and x2 are already given, what kind of search can we talk about? The next moment - if we interpret this condition so that the perimeter of the rectangle is 4, then when solving we come to the same units.
Tell me, is this task incorrect or am I misunderstanding something?

@EkZha

Are you sure that in the problem it is x1=x2=1, and not, say, x1+x2=1?
