Commenting system using Facebook API

Is it possible to build a commenting system for a standalone blog (on a self-written CMS) using only the Facebook API? I read developers.facebook.com and did not understand whether it is possible to pull out the counter of the number of comments on the main page of the blog, is it possible to implement a tree-like structure of comments?

What are the limitations of the Facebook API in this regard? Also interested in working examples of successful facebook integration.

Implementation by means of Vkontakte is not interested? This is exactly what we did for ourselves.
