Collection of index usage statistics?

Good day!
I am writing a thesis on database query optimization.
Explain the algorithm for collecting statistics on the use of indexes.
found just such a formula for collecting statistics

where Ki is the number of indices. K is the number of index usages. T is the time of collecting statistics.
