Can you tell us about the VMK MSU?

Hello! Now I'm in the 8th grade, an Olympiad in Informatics. In the future I'm going to become a programmer and I'm going to enter the Moscow State University. I heard that there is a division into streams.
1) Can you tell us in more detail about the flows on the VMC, how they differ, whether it is possible to choose, etc.
2) How is the security there? What are the conditions in the hostel?
3) Is it possible to work in the specialty and if so, from what course?

At the very beginning of the journey, in order not to lose time, focus on physical and mathematical disciplines, and the basics of computer science, Boolean algebra ... and do not forget to follow all the current trends in the world of information technology, just for a hobby and entertainment of your personal development. All this will gradually affect your success. You will be an expert if you are drawn into it all, you will love it to ones and zeros, and no null will scare you, no overflow will turn you off the right path. The main thing is to love your work and strive to improve it. Well, love everyone around you and thank the whole world that is around you, because the sun also shines for a reason .... :)

Don't worry about the hostel. If it is (and it should be at Moscow State University) and inexpensive, then the rest is not important.
As for the work, I heard that students mostly get jobs in projects that are being developed within Moscow State University.
It is better not to hurry with work, if there is not enough time for work and study, then it is better to choose study.

Finished this beautiful establishment a couple of years ago. Much could have already changed (and I studied to be a "specialist", it seems they have already been canceled, which means my information is very outdated), but when I studied, it was somehow like this.
Two courses all studied according to one program, then three streams, very roughly speaking, mathematicians, analysts and programmers - in fact, everyone is engaged in mathematics and programming in one way or another. You can choose priorities, and then the departments themselves choose who they want to take on - in short, you need to either study well or establish contacts in advance, for example, through attending special courses, in order to get exactly to the desired department. But most likely it won't be a problem. What is different - just look at the schedule and descriptions of the departments, but in the process it will become clear. In general, you shouldn’t worry too much about the flow, it’s more important than what the potential supervisor is doing at the department.
If we are talking about material support, then it seems to be a bit heavy, but I remember a couple of people with him. Better not to hope too much unless there is a good reason. The hostel was ... ordinary, Soviet-style, you can live, it does not fall apart, but it is better not to have special expectations. Senior students live in the main building, but there the interior is not much different overall for my taste. In general, I do not regret that I was there only on a visit.
It was not officially encouraged, in fact, starting, on average, from the fourth year, most students work somewhere, whether it be their own departments or, which is actually much more often, work on the side. I was never able to find any work for all the time, only after, but in this sense I was an exception - this is wrong.
And now I will dispel the illusions that VMK does not train programmers, it is primarily a mathematical faculty. In general, practically nowhere in classical universities do they train programmers anywhere in our country, it happened like that. Many very, very important, useful and fundamental things related to programming, studying at the faculty will give, especially if you are interested in more scientific or mathematical problems, but no one will teach you how to program practically well, my bitter experience confirms that you will have to catch up with all this yourself. From a practical point of view - languages, algorithms, design, testing, technologies, frameworks, all this is basically bypassed. Something like this.
I advise you to take a closer look at the Higher School of Economics, there are faculties that are very close in spirit to the VMK and, it seems to me, are more progressive, at least in terms of the technologies used. Some teachers even overlap. In practice, however, I suspect a similar situation.
In general, there is still time to think and think well. In no case do I dissuade VMK, one way or another, one of the best faculties on the topic and still, probably, the most quoted, which is also important. But you need to learn to program in a good way now, since it has become even an order of magnitude easier than when I was in the eighth grade and just started :)

1) It's too early for you to think about it. In the 11th grade, ask students who can be easily found on VK or somewhere else.
2) I don't understand what you mean by security. But the dorms at Moscow State University are kind of bad.
3) Yes, you can even from the 1st course, if there is time and a suitable vacancy. But still, usually from the 3rd year they go to work. Before the 3rd year, it would be nice to participate in student projects, etc.
