Can you pick up a good book on local networks?
I need a book on local networks, I ask this question here, and not Google for several reasons:
1. more groping people are sitting here than in response to mail ru.
2. A small volume of the book is more preferable, knowledge is needed to simply understand how it works and how to set it up, without super deepening.
3. I want to know what subnets, vpn, gateways, etc. are.
Thanks in advance.

There is a good series of articles on habrahabr "Networks for the smallest" .
There is such an interactive course "CCNA 200-120 Routing & Switching 2014", here there is everything that interests you, with pictures and practical exercises, everything is explained on the fingers and in Russian.

I'm sorry, but it's spherical in a vacuum. All read theory, in this case, will not cost anything. Just waste your time. Need practice on real problems. They can be simulated if there are no workers. After all, read the toaster for the tags you are interested in, see what people do, how they do it and try to repeat it.
You write about VPN. Take it and raise it first on Windows, then on Linux. In the process, an understanding will come of how it works and why it is needed at all.
Raise the machine on Windows and Linux (in turn, of course) and distribute the Internet from it to the local network.
It will be a real experience, albeit in a test environment, and will bring much more than just reading without understanding.
As an option, take a course on intuit.ru, local networks and the Internet.
Here's a short test course for you.
