Can the processor and hub on the motherboard burn out?
Brought the unit in for repair. The master called, said that the hub controller and somehow the processor burned out, and one of the usb ports became the cause of the combustion. There was something in him. I can not be sure of the veracity of the words of the master. Knowledgeable people, help to understand. Could it be?

It all depends on the laptop model.
If the hub and the processor are made in different cases, then this is unlikely.
If you have a modern laptop, where the hub and the processor are implemented on the same substrate, then with short circuits in the USB ports, it is likely that the processor and the hub on it are for replacement.
Maybe why not.
But questions like this always make me laugh. You took the piece of iron to the SC, and do not trust them. OK, let's say. More confidence in the toaster?
Easy. Here on Habré I came across the "USB killer" device, which really burns out the ports and electronics inside (in case of a big failure, it can reach the processor IMHO) with high-voltage discharges on the data bus. And yet, yes, especially gifted servicemen can use this one. It is necessary (was?) to log in what state the system manager left, what was in order in it, i.e. if the port indicated by their specialist was operational at the time of delivery for repair, there is a destructive effect in the SC, and for this you can try to bend them. Otherwise, according to the situation.
IMHO, just five volts on the data bus will not burn the USB port, especially the processor, but such a breakdown can turn off the hub.
