Can ISPs monitor traffic?

Can ISPs, VPNs, Proxy servers monitor traffic?
I think SSL protects against such?
For example, I log in to the site and can these intermediaries see all my messages / traffic?
I am concerned about my privacy.

Of course they can. And they do it all the time, but in some places (in the Russian Federation, for example), they are obliged to do it :) (providers).
Of course, ssl protects, but... there is such a thing as bumping :) and due to the ubiquitous ssl-ization, I think we will see its widespread use nationwide very soon. If the provider/VPN/proxy requires a certificate for whatever reason to get started, it will definitely bump it :) If not, they can write logs, which may also be interesting for certain people...
