Can I use airpods (listening only) + third-party microphone with Lightning (not airpods microphone)? Or will it conflict?

Is it possible to do this: hear through the airpods, and speak into a third-party microphone with Lightning (and not the microphone of the airpods)? Or is it impossible to connect?
