Can I update the Android OS version myself?
Let's say I bought a phone with some version of Android. Can I update it myself to a newer one? Or you need to wait until (if) the manufacturer releases a new firmware.
According to the topics here, I got the impression that I can’t update myself, but I want to make sure.

It all depends on what phone you have. Nexus One receives the latest firmware in the shortest possible time directly from Google. HTC Desire, being its twin brother, also gets them after a short time. With other devices it is more difficult, it is more difficult for craftsmen to make independent updated assemblies, but they nevertheless exist. The most “multidevice” is CyanogenMOD :
1. Nexus One
2. HTC Aria
3. HTC Dream / HTC Magic
4. Motorola Droid
5. HTC Desire
6. HTC Evo
7. HTC Slide
8. HTC Hero CDMA
9. HTC Hero GSM
10. Samsung Galaxy S
11. HTC Incredible
12. HTC Legend
It is assembled from sources posted by Google and manufacturers. Often things like the camera, FM radio, etc. don't work. these things are strongly tied to the specifics of each piece of iron, but otherwise the firmware is quite stable.
I have an HTC Desire with some version of Android. The manufacturer first released the update, and then hid it from the public for a while, but with a special keyboard shortcut, it was still possible to enter a mode that allows you to apply the update (previously downloaded prudently) directly from the flash card (and not over the air from a remote site). This mode is intended for employees of service centers.
It just won’t work to download and compile - you need drivers for hardware. As a rule, if the manufacturer delays the release of firmware with a new android, you can install custom firmware (full on w3bsit3-dns.com).
You can try to put the left firmware, but if the phone is locked, then nothing will work.
