Can I disconnect my Wacom pen tablet from a running computer?

My first Genius Easy Pen burned out after half a year of use, because I constantly disconnected it from a working laptop (or laptop in sleep mode). Now I use a simple Wacom Intuos Pen, and very often I have to work in different places. That is, you need to disconnect everything, slam the lid of the laptop, immerse everything in the bag and move. Closing all programs, waiting for a complete shutdown of the computer takes a lot of time.
Therefore, the question is: how to safely disconnect the tablet from the computer so as not to damage it?

Are you sure that it "burned out" precisely because of the disconnections? Where does such information come from?
The USB standard provides for hot plugging/unplugging devices and the tablet is no different from all other devices.
