Can batteries die if they have been idle for a year?

Good day to all.
HP Pavilion dv6-2022er and Samsung R463 laptops are available.
Both lay idle for about a year and now the batteries are not charging.
win7 indicator shows "0% available. Connected, charging ”

I tried to disconnect the battery for a while, turn it off and hold the power button down for a minute, insert the battery after turning on the charging. Could they finally die?
I heard that in such cases some “kick” is needed.

It happened with the phone. After 4 hours on charging, he finally realized that he was still being charged.

Regarding HP Pavilion:
- Turn off the OS;
- We take out the battery and disconnect it from the network;
- Press the power button for 1 minute;
- Insert the battery and connect to the network;
- Turn on the OS.
Such a scheme often helps. Checked.
