Can a registrar not give up a domain?

Actually, the purely legal side of the question is of interest, can the registrar not return my domain to me for some reason?

Maybe if there are problems with the law, for example, a court decision, a request from the FSB, blocking Roskomnadzor. In other cases, no.

If the domain is registered to a registrar, then yes.

What does "not return" mean? How was it taken from you?

They can. There are not many ways. For example, you are offered to buy hosting instead of a domain. And you will receive the domain "as a gift". Hosting usually costs the same. And you happily agree. Not really reading the fine print ;). And then it turns out that the gift is not really a gift. And your domain from the promoted project floats away to them.

If, for example, the domain violates someone's rights and there is a decision by the regulator to transfer the domain to the trademark owner, or you have used the domain for illegal purposes, then it may well be. A lot depends on the script, details are needed.
