Bytecode or Machine?

Is Bytecode faster than Machine Code? Why no or yes?

The bytecode is more "high-level" so you could say it's slower. But here the problem is in compilers, more precisely in optimization, when you can assemble the bytecode faster than the "similar" machine code will be.
