Bbpress is not an engine?

Hello!

Lots of old and (this is the funniest thing, could anyone check?) not-so-old manuals that claim it's possible to install bbPress outside of the WP. as a standalone engine.

I have a certain amount of dissatisfaction right now....insecure.
I'm right, bbPress can no longer live outside of a WP installation - is it just a plugin? There are no separate (actual) development branches?
