Backup on the router?

Hello! Today, the MGTS promotion connected the Internet. But the bottom line is that they gave a router for free. Having found USB ports on it, the idea came up to do the same as on the Airport time Capsule - a remote backup. Connecting the hdd to the router, nothing happened. Could you tell me how to make it so that you can make backups remotely.
I will answer any comments and explain everything that was not clear .. Thanks in advance

Connecting the hdd to the router, nothing happened.
What should have happened? And what exactly didn't work?
Firstly, it is not a fact that the router supports connecting drives to USB, sometimes only modems are supported.
If it supports, it’s not a fact that the disk will start, the disk, unlike a flash drive, may simply not have enough USB power from the router.
If nevertheless the disk is connected, it will usually be available via FTP.
Therefore, connect via FTP, and drop backups there.
Although the speed will be sad.
And the reliability of such a solution is questionable.
