I may be banal, but start with man awk very well described, if something is not clear, then dig deeper in a specific direction.

Google "Linux and Unix shell programming" if you're looking for the book. There is not only about awk, but it will not be superfluous. And so - on real tasks it is better absorbed. And almost any question has already been solved by someone before you, and this can be easily found on StackOverflow and similar resources.
