Are the theory of probability and combinatorics used in the development of game artificial intelligence?

Good evening, habr! Apart from studying at the university, I dabble in game artificial intelligence, but most of what I saw was just the use of conventional algorithms and bases from game theory (even if indirectly, determining the best strategy possible). Probability theory is used, as far as I understand, closer to the fields of economics, statistics, machine learning with their neural networks, and so on, the latter is not suitable for games due to the consumption of a large amount of resources. As a result, I could not find an application for myself for the course of probability theory and statistics from the university, or I’m digging in the wrong direction, this is what I want to figure out here, namely how you can use probability theory, statistics and combinatorics in the development of a game artificial intelligence? The area is quite interesting

Yes and no. Depends on your goals.
For example, if AI involves calculating and comparing probabilities to select the optimal behavior, then obviously your knowledge will come in handy. Only, here, the choice of AI depends on the game. In some cases, smart AI is not only unnecessary, but harmful.
As they say, the main task of AI in games is to give back beautifully . And for this purpose, abstruse algorithms or neural networks are not really needed.
