Are tags really necessary in Wordpress? And is it good for optimization?

Hello. On the main page of my site, a cloud of popular tags is implemented. On the entry page - material tags.
Q: Are tags necessary for search engine optimization?
And if you disable them in the front-end, then you need to specify them in the back-end? For example, to have the Yoast SEO plugin add them to the head (meta property="article:tag")

If tags do not participate in user navigation, then they hinder rather than help.
Search engines at this stage pay a lot of attention to behavioral factors, and not conditionally technical (actually useless) linking.
I recommend removing the tag cloud and showing instead, for example, "popular articles"...

Do you need tags for search engine optimization?

Yes and no. If you don’t understand how to use them and how they work, then it’s better not to. But in general, you need to think more about the visitor and less about the search engine, and as a result, you will get results in the search engine. Does your visitor need this tag cloud? Does it help navigation? If "yes" - great, if it's a dump of links for the search engine - it's bad for both the search engine and the visitor.

I think it's pretty old stuff. there are more risks than benefits with them. there is a high probability of creating a bunch of duplicate content. So I wouldn't do it. It is better to structure the headings. Read
about duplicate content on the site here
