Android + smart cards in sim format

Many mobile devices have a SIM card slot. And sim cards and smart cards, as far as I know, are technically the same thing. Therefore, having a smart card in the form factor of a SIM card, can you get strong cryptography on an android device?

Actually, a few smaller sub-questions: is it possible to insert smart cards into a sim slot? will it be possible to access it later? and maybe the api corresponding to the android already exists?

Has anyone already been interested in this topic? I give an idea for an article, if I suddenly didn’t miss anything, I’m unlikely to do it myself before purchasing an android device.

I saw a programmer for SIM cards a long time ago (and several blank "blanks" of SIM cards in the kit). Apparently, you can think of something, since micro-applications can be installed on SIM cards. I just don’t know if it’s possible to “reprogram” some kind of valid SIM card, or the SIM cards of READ-ONLY mobile operators (in terms of flashing them).
