An alternative to tasks from books?

background

Actually, a question. How important are tasks from books and is it possible to find an alternative to them in things that interest me?
I understand that the tasks at the end of the chapters are a consolidation of what has been covered, but for how long is it "fixed"? Today, for example, I had to google how to make a function pointer and I remembered that there was a similar task in the book, but I didn’t do it. But what are the chances that I wouldn't have googled for that very problem?

If you're interested in learning theory, read "Think Like a Mathematician" by Barbara Oakley, for example, which describes how exercises work and what they're good for.
