Abbreviated http protocol naming?

I have already noticed for a long time that Yandex puts links to various libraries and pictures located on its CDN in the layout in the following form:
<img src=" //yandex.net/ picture.png "/ > :// " to just two slashes " // ". Is this normally processed on all clients (browsers), does not cause additional browser requests, is this method normally supported in mobile browsers? Who knows what?

This is useful for both http and https.
What is the current protocol on the page, with such a protocol there will be a request.
