A simple icmpping check doesn't work. Unsupported item key. How to fix?
Agent and server version: 4.4
fping the path in the config corresponds to the fping path.

You are confusing something. The "simple icmpping check" doesn't require an agent at all and is done directly from the server:
Simple checks are normally used for remote agent-less checks of services.
Note that Zabbix agent is not needed for simple checks. Zabbix server/proxy is responsible for the processing of simple checks (making external connections, etc).
If you want to ping the third node through the agent, then it will be an active check ("Zabbix agent (active)") through the UserParameter.
