X's don't start. Terminated with error(1)?

Having decided to install kali for myself, I immediately realized that everything would not go smoothly. I write nomodeset in the bootloader so that at least something appears, otherwise a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I go to the console, write startx and in response I get

"(EE) Server terminated with error (1)"
Xinit: giving up
