Write an email system mail itself, how reasonable is this?

Hello! The company requires mail functionality from me, but as far as I understand, no mail system provides this.
I'm thinking of writing my own mail system. For example, inbox, spam, sent, and the main button send mail \ new mail.
How safe is this?
What if then they break it, and I'm covered)?
